AGD Subject Code: 550 – Practice Management and Human Relations

Description

Leaders and managers across the dental and medical field are pulled in every direction: patient care, staff management, provider relationships, compliance, and a dozen “urgent” fires a day. This session introduces the Eisenhower Time Matrix, popularized in Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, as a practical framework for sorting the urgent from the important. Attendees will learn how to recognize when they are trapped in reactive, crisis-driven work and how to intentionally build capacity for the proactive, relationship-building, and strategic work that actually prevents burnout. This is not a time-management lecture. It is a leadership session on protecting your energy while still leading effectively, drawn from over 25 years of leadership experience across large matrix organizations in and out of the dental industry.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the four quadrants of the Eisenhower Time Matrix and accurately categorize their own daily tasks and interruptions using this framework.
  2. Analyze the personal and organizational costs of operating primarily in “urgent” quadrants (crisis management, interruptions) versus the compounding benefits of Quadrant II (important, not urgent) activity.
  3. Apply effective prioritizing and delegation techniques that protect time for Quadrant II priorities, such as relationship-building, staff development, and proactive problem-solving.
  4. Develop at least one personal boundary or delegation strategy to reduce reactive workload and lower the risk of burnout, without sacrificing team or patient outcomes.
