James Almond is a Detective with the Leland Police Department in Leland, NC with over 22 years of experience conducting investigations at the local, state and Federal level. Detective Almond is currently assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a Task Force Officer in the Wilmington Resident Office in Wilmington, North Carolina. Prior to working for Leland Police, Detective Almond worked for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department for over 20 years. During that time, he was assigned to the Vice and Narcotics Bureau for over 16 years. He was assigned to the Pharmaceutical Diversion Unit and the DEA’s Tactical Diversion Squad in the Charlotte District Office. Through this unique position, he focused on forged prescriptions, doctor shoppers, and health care diversion investigations involving Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and Pharmacists with a DEA Registration number. Detective Almond was recognized as a drug expert in Federal Court in the Western District of North Carolina.
Detective Almond provided training related to Drug Diversion Investigations and Pharmacy Crimes on behalf of the DEA. He serves as a resource for various drug free coalitions, state licensing agencies, health care providers, pharmacies, and other law enforcement agencies.
Detective Almond is a member of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) and is the current Vice President of the Carolinas Chapter. Detective Almond holds an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate in North Carolina and has a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
This course will provide the student with an understanding of the Controlled Substance Act as it applies to prescription medications and the practice of medicine. Attendees will learn what constitutes a legal prescription under the Code of Federal Regulations. Case examples of prescription drug crimes and their victims will be discussed. Participants will learn the corresponding responsibility that rests between a practitioner who prescribes a controlled substance and a pharmacist who dispenses the medication. Methods to protect a pharmacy and medical practice from common scams will also be discussed.
