The Society of OMS Administrators was created for and by oral and maxillofacial surgery office administrators, but we understand that not every practice uses that specific title for the person in that role. What is important is that our members fit the criteria of their correct membership category.

SOMSA members updated the Bylaws in November 2020 to include expanded membership opportunities. They are listed below, including what qualifies different positions in the OMS office or industry partners to apply for a particular SOMSA membership category. Practice Administrator Member

  • An individual who actively works for an oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, i.e. an organization that provides dental and medical services through one or more Dental Doctors (D.D.S, (D.M.D.), and/or Medical Doctors (M.D.) that is owned by the practicing doctors.
  • A Practice Administrator Member’s principal role must be one of performing significant managerial or administrative duties for the OMS practice.
  • Practice Administrator members are entitled to all Society membership services, including the right to vote on all matters and to serve as an officer of the Society and serve on committees.

Corporate Administrator Member

  • An individual who actively works for an oral and maxillofacial surgery practice that is owned in whole or in part by a corporation of outside investors.
  • A Corporate Administrator Member’s principal role must be one of performing managerial or administrative duties for the OMS practice.
  • Corporate Administrator members are entitled to all Society membership services, including the right to vote on all matters and to serve as an officer of the Society and serve on committees.

Practice Support Member

  • An individual who is responsible for one division of an oral and maxillofacial practice, e.g. human resources, clinical lead, or administrative lead.
  • Practice Support members are entitled to all Society membership services, including the right to vote on all matters and serve on committees.

Business Membership

  • An individual or business who provides products or services to oral and maxillofacial surgery practices.
  • A Business Membership is non-transferable between individuals within a particular business entity, though Business Members may add additional employees to their membership at the regular Business Membership dues rate.
  • A Business Membership is entitled to Society membership services as determined by the Society’s Policies & Procedures Manual and shall not be entitled to vote and will not be eligible to serve as an officer of the Society.
  • Committee participation is by invitation only.
  • Each individual member of a Business Membership must sign a non-disclosure agreement prepared by the Society.

Consultant Membership

  • An individual employed or self-employed in the business of consulting oral and maxillofacial surgery practices but are no longer or never were working as an OMS practice administrator.
  • A Consultant Membership is non-transferable between individuals within a particular business entity, though Consultant Members may add additional employees to their membership at the regular Consultant Membership dues rate.
  • A Consultant Member is entitled to Society services as determined by the Policies & Procedures Manual and shall not be entitled to vote and will not be eligible to serve as an officer of the Society.
  • Committee participation is by invitation only.
  • Each individual member of a Consultant Membership must sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Life Member

  • A Practice Administrator Member, Corporate Administrator Member, or Practice Support Member
    • in good standing
    • whose employment or affiliation with an oral and maxillofacial surgery practice has terminated for any reason, including but not limited to retirement or disability,
    • and who has been an active member of the Society for fifteen (15) consecutive years prior to the termination,
    • and who no longer works with or consults for an OMS practice or related industry.
  • Life Membership may be granted after a qualifying individual submits an application for Life Membership (login required) to the Society’s Membership Committee, which will review the application and forward the application for recommendation to the Board of Directors for approval.
  • A Life Member shall not be required to pay membership dues and shall not be entitled to vote or be eligible to serve as an officer in the Society.
  • A Life Member shall be welcome to attend functions and meetings of the Society and pay the member rate.
